Google Play for Education targets the classroom

Google is targeting K-12 classrooms with its new Google Play for Education store. The education specific store will feature apps, video, and other educational content curated by educators. Google Play for Education currently only will ships with Nexus 7 tablets ordered by schools in the Google in Education program.

Managing a classroom of tablets can be a pain but Google Play for Education is making it easier with bulk purchases and distribution. Teachers can purchase an app and send it out to a group of devices automatically. Google already has this push-to-device feature for its regular Google Play store so it only makes sense to extend it to devices for education.

Google will include any apps marked under the “Education” category in the Play store as well as including curated and verified apps. Developers of education apps can mark their apps for inclusion in the Google Play for Education store, entering a queue for educator approval. This panel of educators will test out the app and tag it for the appropriate subject, grade, and other metadata.

For now, Google Play Education will only be available to schools in the United States.
